Sleeping plays a vital role in the mental and physical development of your baby so it is important to have him get enough sleep. A newborn baby spends most hours of the day sleeping.
The sleeping habits of a baby can be very frustrating for parents because during the first few weeks of your baby, he will wake up several times at night. When your baby cries at night, he may be hungry or you may need to change his diaper.
If feeding him or changing his diaper does not get him back to sleep, maybe it is time to keep track of his daytime activities which may affect his sleeping pattern.
Setting a daily routine for your baby will help to establish his biological clock. For example, you can do a fixed routine pattern such as bathing him in the morning, then feeding and then playing while in the evening you can do story-telling, feeding and then giving him a lullaby. After some time of doing this routine everyday, your baby will start understanding when he is supposed to play and when to sleep.
One possible reason why your baby cannot go to sleep at night is he might had more than enough sleep during the day. A good idea would be to play with him until he gets tired at the end of the day. Playing with your baby will also help him discover new things.
You may also take your baby somewhere during the day for him to see new things. Bringing him to a park or shopping mall or to a house of your friend will help stimulate his mental ability.
A newborn baby usually takes a nap for a period of 30 minutes to 3 hours and takes a total of up to 17 and 18 hours in a day. However, sleeping habits will vary as he grows. You do not have a choice but to be patient during the first few weeks. After all, babies will outgrow their bedtime fussiness over time and you can get back to your normal sleeping habits.
